Leicester Racecourse has a rich history of horse racing and betting, having opened before 1773 and its most famous race is named after King Richard III, who died nearby in the Battle of Bosworth 300 years previously in 1485. You can find the latest betting odds and racing information here, not to mention up to date prices and race cards with runners and riders. The King Richard III Stakes is a Listed race over seven furlongs that takes place in April each year. Its most famous winner is New Seeker who twice won big handicaps at Royal Ascot: the Britannia Stakes and Royal Hunt Cup.

Racing, Betting, Scandal

Leicester stages both Flat and National Hunt racing, but both of its most famous moments in racing history came on the level.

Firstly came the Flockton Grey scandal in 1982, when a ringer was used to win a maiden at Leicester in March of that year.

Flockton Grey was supposed to be making his debut, but another horse, Good Hand, ran in his name and won by 20 lengths. Suspicion was immediate and a police investigation quickly followed. Owner Ken Richardson was charged with conspiracy to defraud.

Eight years later Leicester was the scene of the ‘Second Coming’ of Lester Piggott, the 11-time Champion Jockey who won the Derby nine times.

Having retired as a jockey in 1985, Piggott was jailed for three years in 1987 after being convicted of tax fraud. Yet on October 15 1990 he resumed his career as a rider at Leicester, where he finished second on his first ride back before failing to win on his other two.

He won the next day at Chepstow, though, and then 12 days later sealed his comeback with a sensational win aboard Royal Academy in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Belmont Park.
