Placing Your Grand National Bets

The Crabbie’s Grand National at Aintree is the nation’s biggest betting race, where once-a-year punters join the more regular gamblers among us in roaring home the best steeplechasers around over the famous birch fences.

With 40 horses in the line-up, as well as 30 of the most fearsome fences in the sport, lady luck plays just as much a part as natural ability.

In the last seven years alone, there have been two 33/1 winners (Silver Birch and Neptune Collonges), in 2009 Venetia Williams landed the contest with 100/1 winner Mon Mome and only last year Auroras Encore landed the prize at 66/1.

Yes, luck plays an enormous part each year and the history of the race is marked with tales of horses and riders snatching defeat from the jaws of seemingly-assured victory.

But luck cuts both ways. Backers of ESB weren't complaining when Devon Loch slipped and ground to a halt 45 yards from the line in 1956 and nor were the inspired supporters of 100/1 chance Foinavon when almost every horse fell in front of him and handed him the race 11 years later.

Whichever your way of finding the winner from the Grand National betting odds, from lucky pin to late-night form study, it doesn't matter when the tapes go up at 4.15pm and the charge to the first fence begins.

Here Sky Bet have done their homework and created a Grand National betting guide below to help you both when it comes to choosing your horse and placing a bet.

Looking at the trends for the last 10 years you are looking for a horse that:

  • Is aged 8 to 11 (9 or 10 especially)
  • Carries 10-11 or more
  • Is officially rated 144 or higher (has been rated 148+ at some point in career)
  • Finished in first 5 on last completed start
  • Has won no more than one chase this season
  • Has won a listed or graded chase worth 29K+
  • Has won over 3M+
  • Run in at least 10 chases (winning at least 3)
  • Has run over hurdles in 2014
  • Finished in first 4 in a previous Topham, Becher or Aintree Grand National
  • Finished in first 3 in a previous Welsh National
