The UEFA Champions League is regarded as Europe's premier club competition hosting many of the greatest players and most memorable matches in the world football. From Real Madrid's 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960 to AC Milan's 4-0 success against FC Barcelona in 1994 and Manchester United's last-gasp win against Bayern Munich in 1999, the competition has thrilled fans for more than 60 years.

The tournament is steeped in history dating back to the 1950s when the first European Champions Clubs' Cup fixture was played in Lisbon when Sporting Clube de Portugal were held to a 3-3 draw by FK Partizan. Real Madrid won the inaugural European Cup in 1955/56, the first of five successive victories. Dutch side Ajax (1970-72) and Bayern Munich (1974-76) have also enjoyed a hat-trick of victories.

Madrid have been the most successful side since the formation of the Champions League in 1992/93, winning the competition four times, followed by Milan and Barcelona (3 each). Los Blancos are also the most successful side overall with 10 triumphs, followed by Milan (7), Liverpool and Bayern (5 each), and Ajax and Barcelona (4 each). The Spanish giants also hold the record for final appearances (12). Milan's 2002/03 success came after a marathon 19 games from the third qualifying round of the competition all the way to their penalty shoot-out success against Juventus in the final.

The competition was renamed the Champions League in the 1992/93 season involving a group stage in addition to the traditional knockout format. The success of the competition means 32 teams from across Europe now compete on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the late summer early autumn for the right to reach the prestigious knockout phase.
