Underdogs have prevailed in the Capital One Cup in recent years.

Both Swansea and Birmingham have lifted the trophy in the last three years, while the likes of Bradford, Cardiff, Wigan, Bolton and Tranmere have made recent League Cup finals.

The Bantams were the most notable as they made a mockery of their 1,000/1 odds to reach last season’s Wembley showpiece, ousting Arsenal and Aston Villa en route.

Villa actually boast the second most decorated record in the tournament with five titles and three final appearances, but it is Liverpool who have won the competition the most times, lifting the trophy on eight occasions.

Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest follow with four, while Arsenal’s lack of prioritising for the tournament has seen them fail to add to their tally of two since 1993.

Manchester City also hold a modest record in the League Cup, collecting two titles in the 1970s but failing to win another since.

The competition pits together the 20 Barclays Premier League clubs and the 72 Sky Bet Football League sides.
