Murray backed to end wait
Andy Murray is attracting some significant backing to end the 77-year wait for a British men’s singles Wimbledon winner following his Queen’s triumph.
Sunday’s three-set victory over Marin Cilic sees Murray head to Wimbledon on a 11-match winning streak on grass since his final defeat to Roger Federer last year, having claimed Olympic gold at the All England Club.
Federer also warmed up by adding to his trophy haul, winning in Halle for a sixth time, while Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal opted to rest following the French Open.
Seven-time champion Federer is considered the fourth favourite despite his dominance of the event, with questions over whether he remains at the peak of his powers as his Halle triumph ended a first on tour in 10 months.
In the women’s event, Serena Williams is the overwhelming favourite after romping to victory at the French Open, which sees her head to SW19 on a 29-match winning streak.
