Sky Bet League One is the second-highest division of the Football League and the third tier of the English football league system.

It was introduced for the 2004-05 season and was formerly known as the Football League Second Division and, prior to the creation of the Premier League, as the Third Division.

There are 24 clubs in Division One and at the end of each season the top two clubs, together with the winner of the play-offs between those placed 3rd to 6th inclusive are promoted to the Football League Championship.

Clubs finishing in the bottom four are replaced by the top three clubs in Division Two and the play-off winner of teams placed 4th to 7th.

Champions of League One since the re-structuring include Swansea City and Norwich City who both consequently won promotion from the Championship and have established themselves in the Premier League. Runners-up Hull City (2004-05) and Southampton (2010-11) have also gone on to win promotion to the top flight of English football.

The record for the most goals in a Division One season since the re-structuring came in 2011-12 when Jordan Rhodes notched 38 for Huddersfield Town to fire his club into the Championship via a penalty shoot-out win over Sheffield United at Wembley. Rhodes moved to Blackburn Rovers the following season and won international caps for Scotland.

Current England and Southampton star Rickie Lambert was also a prolific scorer in League One scoring 29 for Bristol Rovers in 2008-09 and 30 the following season following his move to Saints.
