Pundit picks: Who do Jamie Redknapp and Ed Chamberlain reckon should start for England?

With England needing wins against both Montenegro and Poland to absolutely guarantee qualification, debate on who should start for the Three Lions is more furious than ever. In light of this, we asked our very own Jamie Redknapp and Ed Chamberlain to give their views on who can be relied on to fire the national side to Brazil in 2014.

"Joe Hart's still our best goalkeeper. He's had troubles but he'll come through this – and I don't think it's time to throw in a goalkeeper who has never played in a qualifier before into the team.

"At the moment, Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka are our best centre-back partnership and we need those two to play well. I can't see Hodgson going with anyone else.

"In midfield, I'm going with Steven Gerrard sitting in front of the back four with Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney as one of the three, just in behind Sturridge, while I'd go with Townsend wide right and Danny Welbeck on the left.

"Gerrard has been playing that defensive midfield role well for Liverpool this season, while Lampard always gets you a goal – and we need to win this game.

"We've got to win this game and Townsend deserves to play; he's a throwback, every time he gets the ball he runs at people, he's very strong and he'll help out Kyle Walker – those two have been playing together of late and I'm a big fan of relationships between players who know each other's games. We saw Adnan Januzaj play with no fear for Manchester United on Saturday and Townsend would do the same.

"Daniel Sturridge has been in great form for Liverpool, really showing what he can do and hopefully he can repeat that form for England on Friday."

"Let's hope everyone stays fit this week - Roy Hodgson will be delighted to have his attacking players back. Rickie Lambert is unlucky to miss out but an attacking three of Welbeck, Sturridge and Rooney should cause Montenegro all sorts of problems. Carrick will hopefully help England keep the ball better in midfield, while Roy has Andros Townsend up his sleeve to bring on down the right where he links up so well with Kyle Walker. Come on England!"
